Hardwiring the Ring Video Doorbell 2 to an existing doorbell transformer is one of the most consequential installation decisions an owner makes, and it is one that a surprising number of installations get wrong. The Ring Video Doorbell 2 accepts a wide input voltage range (8–24V AC), which creates a false impression that any existing transformer will work. In practice, the lower portion of this range is problematic: an 8V transformer is technically within specification but delivers insufficient power for the Ring Video Doorbell 2 to both operate and charge its battery simultaneously. The result is a hardwired installation where the device appears connected, but the battery continues to drain a failure mode that generates significant confusion because the installation appears correct.
This guide establishes the engineering reasons behind Ring’s voltage recommendations, explains how to evaluate an existing transformer, covers what to do when the existing transformer is inadequate, and addresses every voltage-related scenario an installer is likely to encounter.
THE RING VIDEO DOORBELL 2 HARDWIRED POWER REQUIREMENT: WHAT THE SPECIFICATION ACTUALLY MEANS
Ring’s official specification states: Input Voltage 8-24V AC, 50/60 Hz. Ring’s installation guidance separately states: 16-24V AC recommended.
These two statements are not contradictory; they describe different conditions:
8-24V AC: The range within which the device will power on and operate without immediate damage.
16–24V AC: The range within which the device reliably both operates and charges the battery simultaneously.
The distinction arises from power budget arithmetic. The Ring Video Doorbell 2 in active use (Wi-Fi connected, motion detection active, video streaming during a live view or motion event) consumes approximately 3-5 watts. The charging board needs additional power to top up the battery. At 8V AC, after rectification and regulation losses, the charging board can deliver only marginal current to the battery, enough to offset self-discharge in very low activity conditions, but insufficient during active use. At 16V AC and above, the charging board has adequate headroom to both power the device’s active consumption and deliver meaningful charging current to the battery.
The practical manifestation of this distinction
A Ring Video Doorbell 2 hardwired to an 8–10V AC transformer in a high-activity environment (frequent motion events, regular live views) will show the battery slowly declining despite being “hardwired.” Users in this situation correctly conclude the hardwiring isn’t working, but the cause is insufficient transformer voltage, not a device fault.
UNDERSTANDING TRANSFORMER VA RATINGS
Transformer voltage alone does not determine compatibility; the VA (volt-ampere) rating, which indicates the transformer’s maximum power output capacity, is equally important.
A transformer rated at 16V AC / 10VA can deliver 10 volt-amperes at 16V; that is a maximum current of 0.625 amperes (10VA ÷ 16V = 0.625A), or approximately 10 watts of power output.
A transformer rated at 16V AC / 30VA delivers 30VA at 16V, approximately 1.875 amperes and 30 watts.
The Ring Video Doorbell 2 requires a minimum 30VA transformer for reliable hardwired operation with battery charging. Many older homes have low-VA transformers originally installed for mechanical doorbell chimes, which required only 5–10VA. These underpowered transformers produce the correct output voltage at no load but sag below the rated voltage under the Ring device’s current draw, delivering less voltage than measured and less power than needed.
How to read transformer ratings
The VA and voltage ratings are printed on the transformer label. A transformer labeled “16V AC / 30VA” or “24V / 40VA” meets the Ring requirement. A transformer labeled “16V AC / 10VA” or “16V / 6VA” is undersized. If the label is damaged or unreadable, the transformer can be tested under load. If the output voltage drops more than 1-2V below its rated output when the Ring device is connected and active, the transformer is undersized.
TESTING YOUR EXISTING DOORBELL TRANSFORMER
Before purchasing a new transformer, verify the existing transformer’s output. This requires a multimeter set to AC voltage measurement.
Step 1 – Locate the transformer
Doorbell transformers in North American homes are typically mounted on or near the electrical panel, on a junction box in the basement or utility room, or inside the doorbell chime housing. The transformer is a small rectangular box with two low-voltage output terminals and a connection to the 120V mains circuit.
Step 2 – Identify the low-voltage output terminals
These are the two screw terminals (not the mains connection) from which the doorbell wires run. Do not touch the mains connection side of the transformer.
Step 3 – Measure the output voltage
Place the multimeter probes on the two low-voltage terminals. Measure the AC voltage. The reading should match the transformer’s rated output: 8V, 10V, 16V, or 24V AC are the most common ratings in residential installations.
Step 4 – Check the VA rating
Read the label on the transformer body. Note both the voltage and VA rating.
Step 5 – Test under load
With the Ring Video Doorbell 2 connected and active (pressing the doorbell button to trigger a video call will put the device into its highest power consumption mode), re-measure the voltage at the transformer terminals. If the voltage drops more than 1-2V from the unloaded measurement, the transformer is at or near its VA capacity limit.
If the existing transformer reads below 16V or below 30VA, replacement is recommended.
SELECTING A REPLACEMENT TRANSFORMER
When the existing transformer is inadequate, replacement with a compatible unit restores reliable hardwired charging. The ideal transformer specification for Ring Video Doorbell 2 hardwiring:
Voltage: 16V AC or 24V AC (both within Ring’s recommended range)
VA rating: 30VA minimum; 40VA recommended for installations that also power a mechanical chime
Ring sells its own branded transformer (Ring Plug-In Transformer for Ring Video Doorbell Pro and compatible devices). This is a convenient option, but not the only option; any doorbell transformer with the correct voltage and VA rating is compatible.
Third-party transformer options
Doorbell transformers from manufacturers including Heath Zenith, Edwards Signaling, and Leviton are widely available at hardware stores and online. Select models rated at 16V/30VA or 16V/40VA. Transformers rated at 24V are also compatible but are overkill for a residential Ring installation unless existing wiring requires it.
16V vs. 24V choice
Both 16V and 24V are within Ring’s recommended range. 16V is slightly safer for mechanical chime coils (which can overheat at 24V in some older designs), while 24V provides more headroom for the Ring charging circuit. For most residential installations, 16V AC / 30VA is the correct choice.
WHAT HAPPENS WITH VOLTAGE TOO HIGH: THE 24V UPPER LIMIT
While Ring specifies 24V AC as the maximum input, users with 24V transformers and mechanical chimes should note that 24V AC applied across a traditional mechanical doorbell chime coil can cause the coil to overheat and fail over extended activation periods. The Ring Video Doorbell 2 itself handles 24V without issue; the concern is for the chime, not the Ring device.
If using a 24V transformer with a mechanical chime, install the included diode (included in the Ring Video Doorbell 2 package) in series with the chime circuit as described in the installation documentation. The diode converts the AC signal to half-wave pulsed DC, reducing the effective power delivered to the chime coil and preventing overheating. TRANSFORMER INSTALLATION: ELECTRICAL SAFETY NOTES
Replacing a doorbell transformer involves working with the 120V mains circuit that powers the transformer primary. In North America, this work is subject to local electrical code and, in most jurisdictions, requires the circuit to be de-energized at the breaker before the transformer is disconnected or replaced.
For homeowners comfortable with basic electrical work
Turn off the circuit breaker that supplies the doorbell transformer. Confirm the circuit is de-energized with a non-contact voltage tester before touching any wiring. Replace the transformer, reconnect all wiring to the original positions, and restore power.
For homeowners not comfortable with mains circuit work
The 120V primary side of the transformer is the only mains-voltage component in a doorbell system. All other components the transformer output, the doorbell wires, the Ring device itself operate at safe low voltage. Hiring an electrician for the transformer replacement only is a straightforward and inexpensive job.
EXISTING WIRE COMPATIBILITY WITH HIGHER-VOLTAGE TRANSFORMERS
Upgrading from an 8V transformer to a 16V or 24V transformer does not require replacing the doorbell wiring. Standard residential doorbell wiring (18–22 AWG solid copper) is rated well above 24V AC and handles the Ring Video Doorbell 2’s current draw without any thermal or insulation concerns.
The only wiring consideration when upgrading transformer voltage is that the chime confirm the chime is rated for the transformer voltage being installed (most mechanical chimes are rated for both 16V and 24V). The wiring between the transformer, chime, and doorbell requires no changes.
